The Muralist
John
Kowalczyk
To translate a century of history into a single visual narrative, we have commissioned renowned Milwaukee muralist John Kowalczyk. A graduate of the Milwaukee Institute of Art and Design (MIAD), John has spent nearly two decades defining the visual language of our city.
Known for his vibrant use of pattern and symmetry, John’s work goes beyond simple illustration. From the iconic "Merlin the Albino Buck" in Black Cat Alley (top) to his large-scale installation “Flight of Beauty and Unity” (below) in West Allis, his murals “dignify communities in joyful and awesome ways.”

For Portal to the Past, John will utilize his signature layering technique to weave historical textures, vintage patterns, and the biological rhythm of the Third Ward into a singular, breathtaking facade.
